High school football teams kicked off Week Zero with high-scoring games as teams across the region played dramatic contests—Vista Murrieta won 47-25 over Great Oak and will face Murrieta Mesa on August 29 while Linfield Christian lost 46-14 to Xavier Prep, Beaumont beat San Jacinto 51-14, and San Juan Hills edged Chaparral 38-33. The performances set an exciting tone for the season ahead.

Military veterans who missed their high school graduation due to serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard are invited to apply for a diploma through the Operation Recognition Program. The program (a joint effort of the Riverside County Board of Education, Riverside County Office of Education, and Riverside County Department of Veterans’ Services) has honored 380 recipients since 2007.

On July 29, the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District declared a portion of a Murrieta Creek parcel surplus after a 5-0 board vote. The Eastern Municipal Water District will acquire the just-under-half-acre land—located between Jefferson Avenue and Diaz Road—to relocate and upgrade its lift station.
